What is cheap VPS? 6 important notes for new VPS users

Cheap VPS is a keyword that is often mentioned when designing websites. Designing a website with a large model and many components will require this type. But for many people, the concept of VPS is still too strange.

To help people understand virtual personal servers (VPS) and how to use them. Besides, there are advantages, disadvantages and extremely important notes when using VPS. This article will be all the information you need to know about Virtual Private Server, stay tuned.

# 1 - What is VPS virtual server?

VPS - Virtual Private Server (virtual personal server) is a method of dividing servers. Normally, a physical server can use this method to be divided into many different virtual servers.

With VPS, it is possible to create many virtual servers, used for different purposes, but only need one physical server.

Each virtual server is a separate part. It has a separate operating system, CPU, RAM, IP address, etc. Users will directly manage their servers and do not have to share information with anyone.

With the unique characteristics of each server, VPS also brings a huge advantage. That means you don't have to worry about multiple servers being hacked at the same time. Now a hacked virtual server will only affect that server. Servers in the same system are still not affected.

All of these things help VPS be rated much higher than shared hosting. It overcomes the disadvantages of shared hosting such as: instability, general impact if there is a hack,...

# 2 - How does VPS work?

VPS works by dividing the physical server into many virtual servers

Normally files, data, and information are gathered in a server. This server is usually a computer with the ability to hold large data.

Servers will often be responsible for storing information of one or more websites. When users access information on websites, a command is transmitted to the servers. The server will process the information and return the results that the user searches for through the browser interface.

When too many people access it at the same time, leading to server overload, network congestion will occur. Or there is too much information and the server cannot hold it all, but if you open more servers, it will be redundant and expensive. VPS was born to overcome this.

VPS is created through server virtualization technology. This technology divides the server into many virtual servers. These virtual servers have similar functionality to the original version.

Each virtual server will have different software, information, and data installed. And they are completely separate, so VPS is called personal virtual server (not related to each other).

VPS now has memory, CPU, RAM,... like a real server but there is no need to spend money to make another server.

# 3 - When should I use VPS for my website?

For the purpose of dividing data and processing large amounts of data at the same time. VPS is only suitable for use when you have a very large volume of data. At this time, a server is overloaded and transmission quality is not guaranteed.

If it is a page about information, knowledge, or regular sales, and does not contain too much information, then using a virtual personal server is not necessary. Because these websites only take up a small amount of resources, one server can be more than enough to do it.

The common VPS use cases today are to serve purposes such as:

  • Stores large amounts of information about website services.
  • Game server.
  • Programming, research and development environment.
  • Used as a server system for large-scale businesses.
  • Websites with high traffic require high bandwidth.

When using VPS, you need to consider carefully your actual needs. If it is a normal website without content that takes up a lot of data, you should not use it. And this should be done with the advice of a professional.

# 4 - Advantages and disadvantages of using VPS

Advantages

With the purpose of being born to solve problems commonly encountered when using a server.

Therefore VPS has many advantages such as:

  • Improve data storage and processing capabilities without purchasing additional servers.
  • Simple and quick installation. It only takes 10 - 20 to start using.
  • High security due to not sharing data with others.
  • Similar functions to the server but cheaper cost.
  • Used as an independent server, not dependent on and influenced by other servers.
  • Suitable for managing remote customers. Upgrade or install software at high speed.

Disadvantages

Although there are many advantages, VPS cannot avoid the weaknesses that users face.

  • Affected if the physical server has a problem.
  • Virtual server performance is not equal to physical server.
  • Difficult to upgrade.

Those are the most common problems when using VPS. Umbrella is a very good solution to improve storage space and access speed. But VPS is a virtual part created by a main server. Therefore, if the physical server has a problem, it can greatly affect the virtual servers.

# 5 - Detailed instructions on how to use VPS

To install and use VPS, you need to follow the following 5 steps:

Go to Secure Shell to log in to VPS

Just search for Secure Shell on Google and add it to your website extension.

When buying VPS you will have the following information:

  • IP address
  • A username
  • Password

You fill in this information in the boxes available on the interface.

If you see this command window, you have completed logging in

Update server

In the command window enter the command “apt update command” → Press Enter.

At this point, the software will automatically run and check the parts that need to be updated on the server.

Then press the command “apt dist-upgrade” to update the parts you just checked.

When finished and you don't see the commands running anymore, click "Reboot" to reboot and let the updates be confirmed in the software.

At this point, everything has been installed.

Create a user account and grant permissions

The main account contains the main server, so handling problems when problems occur will be more complicated. To avoid affecting the main account (purchased VPS account), you should create and use another account.

Creating an account requires entering the command “adduser account name”.

Next, you need to grant permissions to this account. This account should be considered a management account to easily handle work.

Enter the command “# usermod -aG sudo account name”.

Finally, enter the password to complete this step.

Activate Public Key

This is a step to improve account security. Compared to setting an insecure password, Public key authentication will have a very high level of security.

First you need to download PuTTY.

Open PyTTY as shown to activate Public Key

After opening the window, the above interface will appear. Click Generate.

It will now ask for a password to start. Once completed, click Save private key. This is the step to set up a personal password (one of the two passwords of the Public key authentication technique).

Once completed, the above window will appear

For now, leave the window as above. Next, open the server with the purchased VPS account. Enter the command “# su – username” to get to the account you just created.

Next enter the following command:

mkdir ~/.ssh

chmod 700 ~/.ssh

nano ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

At this point a new window will appear. Copy the entire box above to paste into the new window. Press the key combination “Ctrl + X” to close the window.

Press Y (Yes). Then enter the following command line:

chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

exit

Next, you need to declare it again to the server so it can recognize you. Open PuTTY → Connection → SSH → Auth.

If done correctly, you will get to the dialog box as shown above

Next click Browse (in the Private key file for authentication dialog box). Choose where you save the Private key.

Finally, go to Secure Shell and enter the command line:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Find the line Password Authentication, then delete the # sign in front. Change from “Yes” to “No”.

Enter the command “PasswordAuthentication no” to save all settings.

Install a firewall to improve security

Setting up a "firewall" is intended to improve website security. However, this process is quite complicated and has a lot of content. To learn best, we will have a separate article with detailed instructions.

Or you can contact Saco Inc for assistance in setting up a firewall for your website.

# 6 - Some parameters to keep in mind when buying or renting a VPS virtual server

RAM

RAM is very important for a quality VPS server

RAM is a factor that helps VPS handle many tasks at the same time. Similar to a computer, the larger the RAM memory of the virtual server, the more and faster the amount of processing will be done at the same time.

Current RAM levels vary widely from 512MB to 16GB. If it is a Cloud VPS, it may have more than 16GB of RAM.

How much RAM is enough depends on your website and how it operates. Normally, light websites used to provide information and buy and sell on average will need about 1GB of RAM.

Choosing more RAM is not always better. Too much RAM leads to excess and waste, so choose just enough to run the website well. You can ask professional services for accurate advice when choosing RAM for VPS.

SWAP

SWAP is not too important for VPS. However, SWAP is like a hard drive, its main function is to help RAM store data when overloaded.

Disk

SSD hard drives access data 300 times faster

Disk is called hard drive, the main job is storage. It stores installation files, source code files,...

On the market today there are 02 types of hard drives:

  • HDD (Hard Disk Drive): This type is the most used on the market today. The advantage is that it has a large storage capacity, but the data retrieval speed is not high.
  • SSD (Solid State Drive): this type has very high data access speed. About 300 times higher than HDD, the price is also much higher.

CPU Core

CPU Core is the word used to refer to the core number of the CPU. The more cores a CPU has, the better its processing ability. Having multiple VPSs will require the CPU to have more cores to divide into each VPS..

Bandwidth/transfer

This is commonly known by the familiar name bandwidth. Bandwidth is the unit of data transmitted.

The more people download data from the website, the more bandwidth is required. If a file has a capacity of 2GB, when downloading, the user will consume 2GB of bandwidth from the website.

IP

IP stands for Internet Protocol - is the connection address

Each IP is a different connection address and there is no overlap. IP addresses help connect components, websites, and data on the internet together.

When buying VPS or renting VPS, users will be given IP addresses. Depending on the service, there will be different numbers of IPs granted. These numbers are random and not consecutive.

# 7 - Users hold all VPS information

When registration is completed, users are given all Cloud VPS information. All operations such as Shutdown, Reboot, Pause, Reinstall are at your sole discretion.

Users only need to register for a confirmation email, all information is controlled through this email.

# 8 - 100% physical RAM usage

This is the difference at Saco Inc. Instead of using virtual RAM as usual. We use all RAM using physical RAM.

This means that each device will be supported by a physical RAM stick for the best processing speed. Performance is much higher than virtual RAM.

# 9 - Refund policy

If you use VPS service at Saco Inc and are not satisfied or the results are not as committed. We will refund the costs to customers within 24 hours.

If we detect errors or omissions, we will repair them completely free of charge.

# 12 - What's the difference between Cloud VPS and Shared Hosting?

As mentioned in the beginning, VPS will have many advantages over Shared Hosting. It overcomes the disadvantages that users often encounter when using Shared Hosting.

However, both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Compare VPS Shared Hosting
Same
  • Large capacity, no need to buy a new server
  • Use a physical server.
Different
  • Difficult to use and manage without enough knowledge.
  • Each virtual server is a separate component.
  • Each individual manages their own information, without fear of information disclosure.
  • No fear of being affected when a server in the system is hacked.
  • Easy to use for new users.
  • Websites share the same server and hardware devices.
  • Privacy is not guaranteed for each subpage.
  • May be affected if one of the sites is hacked.
